This Week

Hey Charlotte,

So we have;

1. a podcast due next Sunday (19th)
2. a second lesson with a data piece collection due this Sunday
3. a story board

For the lesson I was thinking we could do something with testing which soil is best, or which type of lighting is best, or types of vegetables that are able to grow in our environment.

What ideas do you have for the lesson?

We should probably focus on the story board too since that is due Friday.

Talk to you soon.

Part B

Gardening Around the World Leah Fifer & Charlotte Remington Students will use this map to explore Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the city in California where our 5th grade pen pal class is located. Students will write students from California who are learning about gardening, but have very different ways. Students will use the map to explore the reasons why these methods could be so different. Students will be able to change the map to satellite view. Students will answer questions in a journal. Questions include: A. What features does the city in California have that make their gardening conditions so different? B. When you turn on satellite view what differences do you see in the two cities? C. How might California’s vast amount of water supply, being that it is on a coast, aid in gardening vegetables? D. What kinds of predictions can we make about gardening in general in California based on its location in the country and what we know about it’s climate?

Cultural Understanding/Global Awareness Assignment
Leah Fifer & Charlotte Remington

Once students have finished learning about the parts of a plant, the life cycle of a plant, and gardening needs, the students will begin communicating with a 5th grade class from California using ePals. Students will be coming up with a list of interview questions to ask the other class regarding similarities and differences between the types of vegetables planted, uses of the things that are planted, and other questions regarding gardening.

  1. Students will communicate with 5th graders from California.
  2. Students will contact the class once they have researched local vegetable gardening and answered the questions listed below.
  3. Questions asked will include:
    1. Do you have a garden at home/school?
    2. What kinds of vegetables do you typically see grown in a garden near you?
    3. What or who are these vegetables use for?
    4. Have you ever grown your own vegetables? If so, which vegetables?
    5. What vegetables grow really well in your area?
    6. What kinds of things have you seen gardeners do to take care of their vegetables/plants in your area?
    7. Where can you grow a garden?
  4. Once students answer the questions on their own, they will connect with a group of students from California. Students will be responsible for asking them the same questions listed above plus any other questions dealing with gardening techniques and types of plants. Once the information is collected, students will review their answers to the questions and compare answers. Looking at the differences between their local garden and that of someone who lives in California.

Digital Movie

Hi peeps,

We have to create a digital movie (fiction or non) and it has to deal with our project topic.

The movie will be used as an intro to a lesson for a specific concept within the project topic.

I was just thinking that we could do the movie on the same topic that we did our first lesson on.

So I will be doing the life cycle of a plant!

Also** I created the googledoc for the pen pal assignment!

Lesson Plan 1

Hi Girls,

So we need to create 3 lesson plans using TaskStream and we all need to create different ones.

Charlotte and I were talking through text messages and we decided, after our professors comment about picking a main topic, we are going to choose a Vegetable Farmers Market as our main project.

Here are some of the Science GLCEs that correspond to our topic

2nd grade- Life Science- Organization of Living Things

L.OL.E.1 Life Requirements- Organisms have basic needs. Animals and plants need air, water, and food. Plants also require light. Plants and animals use food as a source of energy and as a source of building material for growth and repair.

L.OL.02.14 Identify the needs of plants.

L.OL.E.2 Life Cycles- Plants and animals have life cycles. Both plants and animals begin life and develop into adults, reproduce, and eventually die. The details of this life cycle are different for different organisms.

L.OL.02.22 Describe the life cycle of familiar flowering plants including the

Here are some of the Social Studies GLCEs that correspond to our topic

2nd Grade starts on page 20- I'm not sure which ones we should use to I will include the link

Lesson Plan ideas:

1. Parts of a plant (vegetable) the life cycle

2. Ideal vegetables to grow in our environment

3. Setting up the Farmers Market? (selling, buying, labels, location, prices, flyers)
